Holding Hands

BEEE Creative is proud to support Watford Borough Council's New Connections Dance Company in presenting 'Holding Hands'. The project came about from the need to engage with participants who couldn't access other online provision during the lockdown restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result the whole film was created using a series of WhatsApp calls. Led by dance artist Laura Horn the dancers worked with the theme of people who they loved and who inspire them. The dancers drew around their hands and wrote the names of their loved ones or inspirational figures in the fingers. Qualities of those people were then written in their palm and translated into movement by the dancers. BEEE Creative supported the film production through their Improvising Generations project and funding from the Building Connections Fund (Her Majesty's Government and The National Lottery Community Fund). For more information on New Connections, please contact laura.horn@watford.gov.uk

Gif and Take

Led by Rebecca Benford

This project was created and shared entirely on WhatsApp. The participants generated words using a random word generator, made them into gifs and shared them. They then took movements from other participants and put them together in a sequence. Finally they generated a random descriptive word and applied this to their dance.  The final video was shared along with the descriptive word and emojis of their choice. The participants said they not only enjoyed the dancing but were delighted that they now knew how to create their own gifs, and had even taught the skill to family members.

Fireworks of The Years by Katy Hamilton (age 12)

Watercolour Painting

"Do you remember the New Year 2020? What about 2010? Or even as far back as 2000? They are a huge reminder of how much this world has changed. I love the feeling of sitting on the sofa at midnight passing round crisps and popcorn at midnight saying “Do you remember the time when…..” I can never believe how much can happen in a year despite it seeming so slow. It is one reason why December 31st and January 1st are so special!

This Watercolour portrait is all about the memories you make between those years. The Pocket watch represents the time and the anticipation you get while you wait for fireworks and the new year. The message of this piece is to remember yesterday, smile today and cherish tomorrow!"

Tent Drawing by Bella Piepenstock (age 15)

Drawing/painting

"Start to think about the nature around them, also begin to think of their holiday experiences that are close to camping/ glamping. Once we arrived the fresh smell of the trees surrounding the site engolfed my senses. It made me feel free, youthful and euphoric. The farmer gave my twin sister a golf buggy, which we called Hurbert, as she had broken her foot and could not keep up with our friends on bikes. With Hurbert, our friends Daniel and Michael had races to certain parts of the farm. We would go to the swings at the end of the forest, where we would all play hide and seek, or explore the forest. At night we would see who could last the longest in the woods, as it was dark and eerie. The tents that we stayed in were cold at night if the burner was not on, but during the day the sun would warm them up, due to their dark colour. The parents would go into one tent to talk while the children would go into another to raid the fizzy drinks and chocolates. If there were none we would go to the honesty box shop (which was part of the farm) without the parents knowing: until they had to pay at the end of our trip! "
